The “not defined” glyph in most fonts has the appearance of a rectangular box, or some variation of that. When a character is displayed using a font that doesn’t support that character, a default “not defined” glyph from that font is used. Because the font that the app is trying to use is not present on the system, some other font gets used to display the text instead, and that font may not support all of the characters being displayed. In some cases, these apps have taken direct dependencies on fonts that are not present by default on all Windows 10 systems. But some apps may take direct dependencies on particular fonts for displaying certain Unicode characters and do not utilize the font fallback mechanisms provided by Windows. In certain apps, these changes can lead to the “square box” symptoms when displaying certain international text.Īll Windows 10 editions include fonts that provide broad language support, and the Windows platform includes font fallback mechanisms designed to ensure that text in any language always displays with legible glyphs rather than boxes. More details on these changes are provided below. Some fonts that previously were included in every Windows desktop system have been moved into optional font packages, and so may not be present on all Windows 10 desktop systems. Some fonts that were included in Windows Phone 8.1 are not included in Windows 10 Mobile. A side effect of these changes is that a small subset of existing apps created for earlier versions of Windows or Windows Phone may be affected. Some key improvements have been made in Windows 10 that affect fonts more details on this are provided below. On Windows 10 desktop, this issue typically involves text in languages other than the languages for which that system is configured, and within certain types of apps that support scenarios in which international languages may be encountered (e.g., browsing the Web, and user notifications in social networking apps). On Windows 10 Mobile, this issue is most likely to involve East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean). This issue typically involves text in Middle East or Asian languages (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, etc.). When running certain apps on Windows 10 desktop or Windows 10 Mobile, some characters display as a square or rectangular box, or as a box with a dot, question mark or “x” inside, while the same app running on earlier Windows or Windows Phone versions did not have this problem.

The air molecules oscillate in simple harmonic motion about their equilibrium positions, as shown in part (b). As the speaker moves in the negative x-direction, the air molecules move back toward their equilibrium positions due to a restoring force. As the speaker moves in the positive x-direction, it pushes air molecules, displacing them from their equilibrium positions. In solids, sound waves can be both transverse and longitudinal.)įigure 17.3(a) shows the compressions and rarefactions, and also shows a graph of gauge pressure versus distance from a speaker. (Sound waves in air and most fluids are longitudinal, because fluids have almost no shear strength. These compressions (high-pressure regions) and rarefactions (low-pressure regions) move out as longitudinal pressure waves having the same frequency as the speaker-they are the disturbance that is a sound wave. But a small part of the speaker’s energy goes into compressing and expanding the surrounding air, creating slightly higher and lower local pressures. As the speaker oscillates back and forth, it transfers energy to the air, mostly as thermal energy. In Figure 17.3, a speaker vibrates at a constant frequency and amplitude, producing vibrations in the surrounding air molecules. When the resonant frequency is reached, the glass shatters.Ī speaker produces a sound wave by oscillating a cone, causing vibrations of air molecules. As the frequency of the sound wave approaches the resonant frequency of the wine glass, the amplitude and frequency of the waves on the wine glass increase. This video shows waves on the surface of a wine glass, being driven by sound waves from a speaker. While some journalists have called Amy cute and powerful, others find her annoying. Amy's first appearance in a Sonic platformer as a playable character was in Sonic Adventure she is playable in Sonic Heroes (2003) and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and appears as a non-player character in games such as Sonic Unleashed (2008). In Sonic CD, Metal Sonic kidnaps Amy and Sonic must rescue her. Not possessing the speed or strength of the other characters, Amy uses a hammer to defend herself instead. Series co-creator Yuji Naka said that Amy was designed "to always chase Sonic", and has made it her life goal to one day marry him. She spends much of her time following Sonic to get his attention or make sure he is safe while demonstrating her affection. In the games, Amy is depicted as driven and competitive. Amy received her present design, with a red dress and knee-high leather boots, in Sonic Adventure (1998), courtesy of designer Yuji Uekawa. The character had two other names in game previews: Rosy the Rascal and Princess Sally (a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog TV series and comics). Her fur color was red at first, and her skirt orange. Her headband and trainer shoes reflected Sonic CD director Naoto Ohshima's tastes, and her mannerisms reflected the traits Hoshino looked for in women at the time. Hoshino created her in-game graphics, with many staff members contributing ideas to her design. Amy was created by Kazuyuki Hoshino for Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993), although she appeared Kenji Terada's Sonic the Hedgehog manga a year before. Tails has a very high IQ and excellent mechanical skills.Įnglish: Jennifer Douillard (1999–2004), Lisa Ortiz (2003–2010), Cindy Robinson (2010–present), Shannon Chan-Kent ( Sonic Prime) Īmy Rose is a pink hedgehog and Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend, who is an energetic tomboy. Frequently portrayed as a sweet-natured and humble fox, Tails used to be picked on because of his twin tails, before he met Sonic. Tails starred in two solo spin-off games for the Sega Game Gear in 1995 – Tails' Skypatrol, and Tails Adventure. Tails has appeared in almost every Sonic game since his first appearance. He was first made playable in the Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. His first appearance was in Sonic 2 for the Game Gear, where he was kidnapped by Doctor Robotnik for a "hefty" ransom. Yasushi Yamaguchi, originally the main artist and zone designer for Sega's Sonic Team, designed Tails for an internal competition for a sidekick to Sonic. He can use his tails to propel himself into the air like a helicopter for a limited time. Miles Prower, better known by his nickname, Tails, is a two-tailed fox who is Sonic's best friend and sidekick. Main article: Tails ( Sonic the Hedgehog) The Sonic games keep a separate continuity from the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie Comics and other Sonic media and, as a result, feature a distinct yet overlapping array of many characters. The series features three fictional species, in order of appearance: Chao, which have usually functioned as digital pets and minor gameplay and plot elements Wisps, which have been used as power-ups and Koco, which when collected grant new abilities for Sonic, among other things. These have ranged from anthropomorphic animal characters such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Cream the Rabbit to robots created by Eggman such as Metal Sonic and E-123 Omega, as well as human characters such as Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik. The series has introduced dozens of additional recurring characters over the years. All five of these have remained major characters and appeared in dozens of games. Sonic 3 introduced Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic's rival and later, friend. Sonic CD introduced Amy Rose, a female hedgehog with a persistent crush on Sonic. The sequel, Sonic 2, gave Sonic a fox friend named Tails. The Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise began in 1991 with the game Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, which pitted a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog named Sonic against a rotund male human villain named Doctor Eggman (or Doctor Ivo Robotnik). Clockwise from top: Doctor Eggman, Rouge the Bat, Shadow the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, Miles "Tails" Prower, Cream the Rabbit, Cheese the Chao (flying, center), and Blaze the Cat. Silver maple lumber is similar in appearance to red maple, but cannot be used interchangeably. Silver maple is grouped into the soft maple lumber group by the sawmill industry. Growing in creek bottoms and wet areas, it is fast growing and less dense than sugar or red maple. Silver maple, Acer saccharinum, is a maple species that likes to keep its feet wet. Both hard and soft maple are important pulpwood species supplying our pulp and paper industry. Soft maple is a less expensive substitute for hard maple lumber and is also used for kitchen cabinets usually in painted applications. Soft maple has a diffuse porous cell structure like hard maple and looks very similar in appearance. Despite its name, soft maple is still relatively hard and dense, but less dense than sugar maple. In the sawmill industry, red maple is called soft maple. Red maple can also be used for maple syrup production, but its sap sugar content is less than sugar maple. Red maple, Acer rubrum, is the second most abundant tree species by volume in all of Wisconsin with 2.7 billion cubic feet of live trees. Hard maple has been popular for years for kitchen cabinets and in solid strip wood flooring, especially sports flooring applications. Hard maple has a diffuse porous cell structure, which means the cell diameters are relatively small, which produces a closed and subtle grain pattern. It is hard and dense, equal to red oak in density. From a production perspective, sugar maple is called hard maple in the hardwood lumber industry. It’s not the only maple that can be tapped for maple syrup production, but it does have the highest sap sugar content of our native maples. Sugar maple is popular in sugar bushes around the state. Our state tree and most abundant tree species by volume in all of Wisconsin, boasting 2.8 billion cubic feet in live trees. I’ve already mentioned sugar maple, Acer saccharum. Let’s look at Wisconsin’s maples and how they are used in our daily lives. We all know the sugar maple, our state tree, but the others are less well known. Wisconsin has seven native maple trees and many more non-native ornamental maples, with some of these considered invasive. In this month's installment of Field Notes Scott Bowe of Kemp Station discusses Wisconsin’s maples and how they are used in homes and schools. Mature trees can also be girdled in early summer by removing a four inch strip of bark and cambium from the whole circumference of the trunk. The incidence of regrowth also seems to depend on age, with mature trees regrowing less readily after felling than seedlings and saplings (Munger 2003). Although Norway maple can resprout from cut stumps, it seems to do so less aggressively than many invasive trees and shrubs. Physical control: Seedlings are easily hand-pulled from moist soil larger saplings can be dug or pulled using equipment. If control is undertaken when seed is present, it is best not to remove plant material from the site to avoid spreading seed. Whenever possible, plants should be controlled before they begin producing seed at around 10 years of age. Timing and spread concerns: Early detection is an advantage in managing any invasive species. For local assistance managing woody invasive species, please get in touch with a cooperative invasive species management group or a university extension program. For more detailed information on how to use these techniques, visit our Management and Control page. The following is a brief overview of management techniques shows to be effective on Norway maple. Green = native to part of the Great Lakes Basin It grows faster than red maple and has better branch structure than silver maple.ī The species is too large for most urban areas, but narrow cultivars may be suitable. ~ = trait is somewhat present but not as pronounced as in check-marked examplesĪ Freeman maple is a hybrid of two native maple species (silver and red). Alternatives for Norway Mapleīlack gum / Sour gum / Tupelo ( Nyssa sylvatica ) Please see our Landscape Alternatives pages for more information about how the WIGL Collaborative selected alternatives. The samaras of Norway maple are somewhat larger than those of native species, and the angle between the two halves is wider. Norway maple can be distinguished from sugar maple by the milky white sap that appears at the base of leaf stems when leaves are pulled from twigs. Look-alikes: Of the native maples, Norway maple is most similar in appearance to sugar maple ( A. Each wing of the samara is 1 ½ – 2” long, and the angle between them is wide, giving the samara a coat hanger shape. Fruits mature in early-to-mid fall and are the papery, winged two-chambered samaras characteristic of maples. Flowers emerging in early-to-mid spring are light green to yellow, each 1/3” across, and born in clusters. Leaves have five sharply pointed lobes, and are dark green to maroon in summer, sometimes changing to yellow or gold in fall (foliage color varies by cultivar). Its leaves are opposite each other, and are 4-7” in length and width. Identification: Norway maple is a large deciduous tree, often over 40’ tall at maturity and with a similarly broad crown. “It is a learned error, a perceptual error, or a physical error, those are the three things I go through” Moyer “(Regarding defining the results of a COD/agility program) A lot of it’s qualitative” Moyer “In actual open sports, how well you perceive the information in the environment, that will directly dictate mechanics, kinematics” Zweifel “What I hope for is that it looks crisper when they are doing it (COD in sport) and they shouldn’t be thinking about it when they are doing it” DeMayo “If you watch sports a lot of athletes don’t (decelerate) on two legs, they do it on one leg… one of the things I look for is how many steps does it take for an athlete to stop” Moyer “I don’t think there’s so much a biomechanical model there’s KPI’s” Moyer “I think that one thing is we would see a lot of carryover and success (into agility) with the integration of some form of extensive method jumping” Moyer “In the biomechanics of change of direction, you always have to look at it in the context it is going to be asked in sport… if we are going to change technique or biomechanics, we have to do it within the context of which it is going to be asked in sport” Zweifel “I want athletes to be able to solve problems on their own without me giving them the answers” Zweifel “In field based sports, change of direction means the basics of what we are trying to teach, and agility means implementing into a situation where it is responsive to some sort of stimulus” DeMayo
The product page on Native Instruments’ website describes it as a tool to “Create evolving sounds and textures from a library of carefully sampled children’s toys.” The sampled source sounds were used to create more complex patches with the help of some clever processing powered by the Kontakt engine. It is based on a collection of toy samples. The third free Kontakt library by Native Instruments is called Kinetic Treats. You can then use the Native Access license manager to download and install the library. Kontakt Play Selection contains 10 presets from each library.Īs we already mentioned, the easiest way to get Kontakt Play Selection is to add the Komplete Start bundle to your Native Instruments account. It is based on a selection of presets from three different libraries: Analog Dreams, Ethereal Earth, and Hybrid Keys. Kontakt Play Selection is another free Kontakt library from Native Instruments. Kontakt Play Selection (Native Instruments) Twenty Five is a rather large 2.5 GB download, but that’s understandable since it contains over 100 multi-sampled instrument patches. Access the advanced control panel to control the built-in sequencer and manage the macro controls. The instrument’s front panel lets you adjust the filter, saturation, delay, and reverb. It covers everything from bass sounds to pianos and soundscapes. The library is perfect if you’re looking for synthesized sounds, cinematic tones, and sampled instruments. The library includes 150 unique presets sampled from some of the company’s most iconic products like FM8, Absynth, Massive, and others. Twenty Five is an epic free Kontakt library that Native Instruments released in celebration of their 25th anniversary. The free Komplete Start bundle contains Kontakt Player, Kontakt Factory Selection, Play Series Selection, and other music production software goodies. To get your free copy of the Kontakt Factory Selection library, simply add Komplete Start to your Native Instruments account. You’ll also find a handy set of synthesizer samples, drum machine loops, and electric pianos, as well as a collection of sampled world and ethnic instruments.Īctually, my favorite part of the Kontakt Factory Selection is the African percussion patch that is perfect for building percussive loops. You’ll get the bread-and-butter stuff like acoustic pianos, organs, acoustic drums, electric guitars, and even some decent-sounding bass guitars. Kontakt Factory Selection provides a valuable starter kit of acoustic and electronic instruments. Available for free download from Native Instruments as part of the Komplete Start bundle, it delivers a versatile set of sampled instrument sounds. If you’re just starting out with music production, this (in tandem with the Kontakt Player plugin) is one of the first items to add to your digital audio workstation. I’m stating the obvious here, but you can’t write about free Kontakt libraries without mentioning the Kontakt Factory Selection. Kontakt Factory Selection (Native Instruments) You can also learn how to install third-party Kontakt libraries and how to get a Kontakt crossgrade.
For some couples this might cover 10 people, for others this might be 50. These are the people you simply can't imagine getting married without - the Desert Island Discs of wedding guests. So let's get started! Photo by Katie Farrell Photography via One Fab Day A-List: The Guests You Need to Invite to your Wedding In your family, your cousins might feel more like siblings, perhaps having lots of children at your wedding is a high priority, or maybe you want to keep your guest list as small as possible - perhaps even elope! Simply put, you should invite all the people you want there, and you shouldn't feel forced to invite anyone you'd rather not have in attendance. It may seem really cruel to split your friends and family up into lists, but it's a practical way to do it, and let's face it, we've all been a C-list wedding guest at least once in our lives, are we right? Of course, who you invite to your wedding is entirely personal, so your A-D list might vary vastly from ours. Photo by En Route Photography via One Fab Day But we've put together a general guide that might help you prioritise some guests over others, and work out who you really want there, and who you can leave off the wedding guest list altogether. When it comes to asking yourself who do have to invite to your wedding, there are no hard and fast rules. For some couples, it's a straight-forward process, for others, well, it's a lot less clear-cut. It will affect your choice of venue, and how you allocate your budget. Compiling your wedding guest list is probably one of the first things you'll do when you start wedding planning. |
